What is the "Non-surgical" or "Abortion Pill"?

Mifepristone (Mifeprex), commonly known as Medical Abortion / "Abortion Pill" / "At home" Abortion / RU486, provides women with a safe medical alternative to the traditional surgical abortion.  With this method, a patient visits one of our offices to receive the intial mifepristone medication and then completes the abortion procedure in the comfort and privacy of her own home.  The non-surgical abortion method of pregnancy termination accounts for approximately 30% of all procedure performed prior to 9 weeks gestation.

What should I expect at my visit(s)?

After the initial paperwork, ultrasound, labwork, and examination are completed, final instructions and information are given to the patient prior to administering the "Abortion Pill".  This oral medication (called Mifeprex or Mifepristone) begins the abortion process prior to leaving the clinic.  During the next 24 to 36 hours (at the discretion of the patient), 4 small tablets (called Cytotec or Misoprostol) are inserted orally between the cheek and gums, which then completes the procedure at home.  A mandatory follow-up visit at 1 to 2 weeks following the procedure is required to confirm the sucess of the procedure.  This mandatory follow-up visit requirement is one of the key differences for patient consideration when choosing between a non-surgical or surgical abortion procedure.

How effective is the "Non-surgical Abortion" or "Abortion Pill"?

The abortion pill method is extremely effective with a success rate of nearly 98%.  Only 2-3% of patients require any further follow-up or intervention following an incomplete or failed non-surgical abortion.  Of course, any further follow-up treatement that may be needed is provided at no cost to the patient.

How safe is the "Non-surgical Abortion" or "Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill procedure is extremely safe with a serious infection rate of less than 1 in 1,000 patients (0.1%), with only 1 in 100,000 (0.001%) patients deaths from serious infection.

What is a "D&C" or "1st Trimester Surgical Abortion"?

The "D&C" or "1st Trimester Surgical Abortion" is a gentle "in-clinic" procedure used to terminate pregnancies of 5 to 13 weeks.  In contrast to the "Non Surgical Abortion" or "Abortion Pill" method, the D&C surgical abortion is performed under the direct supervision of our staff physician during which time the patient is asleep.

What should I expect at my visit(s)?

The 1st trimester or D&C surgical procedure requires on a single office visit lasting approximately 2-3 hours.  Following the initial paperwork, ultrasound, labwork, and pre-op examination, the procedure is performed in a safe and secure operating room by one of our highly skilled and licensed OB/GYN surgeons.  General anesthesia is provided under the supervision of a highly trained and licensed CRNA should the patient choose to be asleep for the procedure.  Following the surgical procedure, the patient is then taken to our general recovery room where licensed nurses and medical assitants monitor patient recovery.  Prior to discharge, post-operative instructions, medications, and birth control are provided for continued recovery at home.

How effective is a "D&C" or "1st Trimester Surgical Abortion"?

The D&C surgical procedure has a success rate approaching 99%.  On very rare occasions, a second surgical procedure may be recommended or required to treat subsequent problems or concerns.  Of course, all follow-up care is provided at no additional cost to the patient.

How safe is a "D&C" or "1st Trimester Surgical Abortion"?

A D&C surgical procedure is a very safe method of pregnancy termination with the risk of serious harm or death far below that associated with routine childbirth.  In general, serious risk of infection, bleeding, or death associated with a D&C surgical procedure are far below 1%
